PC Remote Control - Plug and Play Microsoft Windows Vista Media Control Review

PC Remote Control - Plug and Play Microsoft Windows Vista Media Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did not try software, since this was for my linux box, so I cannot comment on the compatibility that the previous reviewer had with the software. However, The remote uses basic IR codes that any third-party remote key remapping software should be able to handle even if the software included does not work. I used Lirc on linux to set it up to work with XBMC media center software under ubuntu. The remote does seem to have some issue with not sending a gap signal after each keypress, so the automatic button assignment feature in LIRC did not work for this remote, which is why I took off one star, But I was able to run LIRC in debug mode, start the remote test client that comes with LIRC, and press each of the buttons to find the proper codes, and set it up manually in the config file. after wich the remote works like a charm.
The only other negative I had with it is that aside for the volume control buttons, holding down the buttons does not repeat, which could be a minor annoyance with the directional buttons to navigate alot of files in the media center software.

ASUS Eee Box EB1501-B0167 Nettop PC - Black Review

ASUS Eee Box EB1501-B0167 Nettop PC - Black
Average Reviews:

Now that I've had the EB1501 integrated into my home theater for a few weeks, I thought I would update my review of it.
I have this connected via HDMI to receiver, surround sound and a 52" HDTV. Due to the limitations of my setup (not the EB1501), I do not use HDMI for sound, so I will not say anything about the box's ability to carry both signals properly. If you use S/PDIF for audio, you are going to appreciate the included adapter (works great). I was going to use Boxee or XBMC, but I don't like the hassle of setting up and integrating Tv tuners into those, so I am using Windows 7's Media Center.
The EB1501 is EVERYTHING I have been looking for in a HTPC. It runs (very) cool and (very) quiet. It's barely noticeable yet attractive enough to not have to hide - which makes it easier to get to the DVD drive, power, ports, etc... The computer is stable and a workhorse for this task.
With the Atom processor, I wouldn't recommend trying to do too much gaming or heavy multitasking. As a component in a home theater, this thing runs circles around the almost useless Media Center Extender I was using before.

Pioneer MVH-P8200 Multimedia AV Receiver with 3 In. Color Display Review

Pioneer MVH-P8200 Multimedia AV Receiver with 3 In. Color Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros
-Sleek, clean interface
-Plays music, video, and images
-Great sound
-Great customization (appearance and sound)
Negatives
-No support for artwork on USB devices (save the iPod)
-Needs ridges on side of knob for easier grip
-Sometimes the knob can be hard to push straight in
Overall, I'm happy with this unit. The installation was pretty straightforward. It's easily one of the more customizable units on the market. You can adjust the background, screen color, button color, 8 different EQ settings, including using the 5 that they give you already.
One thing that bugs me is that it doesn't support artwork out of a USB device. It'll display artwork from an iPod but not a USB device. For being a media-centric device, this should be a big embarrassment for Pioneer. I was sorely disappointed when it wouldn't work, especially since all of my music is properly tagged with ID3 tags.
The second problem is lack of an HD radio. This is a hefty price to pay for a radio where they saved money by taking the CD player out.
For those reasons, I gave it a 4 out of 5.
Otherwise it's a pretty nice unit that definitely stands apart from the rest. The clean look along with the ability to play music, videos, and photos from USB devices OR the SD card is quite nice. The multi-control knob is actually quite nice and makes for easy adjustment of many settings. And once you get a hang of the home list, operating this is a piece of cake.
There's a reason I stick with Pioneer and this unit proves why. The sound quality is unparalleled. I have no problem recommending this unit.
Edit: One other thing that I want to mention is that other than the standard guidelines (so many folders, so many files, etc.) that this radio will handle (at least) up to a 16GB flash drive (more from what I read, with people actually hooking up 60+GB portable hard drives) and a 16GB SD card. I had previously read that the limit on the SD card was 2GB but this is not true; my 16GB card borrowed from my XSi worked beautifully.

"Mech-free" receivers are all the rage lately, as more and more consumers migrate their music and media collections to hard drives rather than physical media. The MVH-P8200 from Pioneer is one of the company's first mech-free receivers, and has plenty to offer the digital-centric crowd. Enjoy direct control of your iPod, with simple navigation and search features. Play back MP3/WMA/AAC audio files, DivX video, and even JPEG images from USB devices or SD memory cards. You can even tag songs heard on the radio for later purchase. It's all conducted via the simple "Rotary Commander" control and simple user interface displayed on the unit's three-inch display.

MVH-P8200 Features
Smart Interface for Quick Access Pioneer's new user interface has a minimal yet powerful design, and scales to accommodate modern media sources easily. Tailor it to your own preferences with the customizable home menu, putting your favorite features right at your fingertips.
USB Input / SD Memory Card Slot Connect USB thumb drives or other devices and enjoy playback of your digital audio and video files. Ditto for SD memory cards. This makes it a breeze to quickly grab some media from your computer before a big road trip, and enjoy hours of entertainment on the road.
iPod Direct Control (CD-IU50V required) Connect your iPod directly and experience exceptional sound quality while easily navigating through music, videos and album art on the AVH-P5200BT's screen. Say goodbye to the annoying static of FM transmitters and other iPod half-solutions.
Simple Search for iPod lets you quickly search your iPod/iPhone with alphabetical search by Song, Artist, Album or Genre categories.
MP3/WMA/AAC Playback Play back three of the most popular digital audio formats:MP3, WMA, and AAC. The MVH-8200's screen displays track info, and makes navigating directories/folders a breeze.
Video/JPEG Playback for Non-Stop Entertainment The MVH-8200 features a three-inch color display designed to take full advantage of all of your media. Play music videos and more from your iPod/iPhone, or from SD memory cards/USB devices. The MVH-8200 can decode Divx (AVI or DIVX extensions) video. You can even display JPEG photos using the Digital Photo Frame feature.
Auto EQ Automatically tailors acoustics by fine-tuning frequency bandwidths plus front/rear speaker digital parametric equalization. Result: smooth sound full of subtle nuance and clarity. Requires optional CD-MC20 microphone.
Customize Your Colors The MVH-P8200 will accommodate your taste or mood. Select from six colors (blue/violet/red/amber/green/white) for the display, and 112 colors for key panel illumination.
Connect, Tag, and Download Have you ever heard a great song on the radio, but couldn't remember what it was called or who sang it when you went to go look for it later? Now you don't have to worry about missing out on great music. iTunes Tagging gives you the power to "tag" all of your favorite songs without having to scramble for a piece of scrap paper in the car, then later preview or purchase music at iTunes Music Store. Works with stations transmitting RDS data.
Bring Your Music to Life with Advanced Sound Retriever This year you can hear the detail, warmth, and clarity the way the artist intended it, from all of the highly compressed MP3, WMA and AAC files playing on your CD player. By restoring data that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, we can make your music sound close to CD quality.
Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner Pioneer's legendary Supertuner IIID combines the best of digital and analog tuner technologies to reduce distortion to bring you exceptional FM and AM performance. If you live in an area where reception is weak, you'll hear a big improvement in signal strength. And when you're near tall buildings, Supertuner IIID reduces the effect of multi-path noise, which occurs when the signal is reflecting off of the buildings.
Always have your favorite stations at hand with 18 FM and 6 AM user presets. And when you're somewhere new, let the tuner do the work for you by activating the Best Stations Memory (BSM) function. The tuner will seek out the 6 strongest stations in the area and set them into the tuner presets.
MOSFET 50W x4 Amplifier for the Power Hungry Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, delivering power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. And that doesn't just mean a boost in volume: it means that your music will be cleaner at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. Clean, efficient power that will rock your vehicle.
For those who'd like a bit more power, three 4V RCA preamp outputs are also included for system expansion (front/rear/sub).

Cisco-Linksys Media Center Extender with DVD Review

Cisco-Linksys Media Center Extender with DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My initial impression are (1) if all you want is a media center extender to do what it is intended to do, then this is definitely the purchase you should make; (2) do not expect anything other than just the media center function and dvd function, that's all your going to get; (3) if the video, music, or picture is not supported by windows media connect *** AND HAS THE CORRECT BITRATE*** it is not going to play; (4) even if your media center pc can playback a file doesn't necessarily mean the extender will play it back, all the processing of the file is done on the extender and the only codecs that get supported are those listed in windows media connect.
I was expecting better codec support from Linksys, but it looks as if Linksys only has their name on the product. It really should have Microsoft on it. You don't need a Vista PC for playback of the dvd function. For you people that like to encode video on your computer and are thinking about using an extender to view it, be careful which format you choose. If it not listed as a supported file by windows media connect you can best believe it is not going to play.
The wireless worked pretty well. I have wireless-n and video playback was great, but navigating through the menus with wireless was sluggish. A wired connection was more responsive but still a little sluggish. Startup time until you get to the main menu is between 30-40 seconds. The unit is absolute noiseless. Even the dvd drive is quiet during playback, fastforwarding and rewinding.
This purchase was not for me. Like i've said many times before, you'll only be satisfied if your files are supported in windows media connect formats. I could not get WMV files to playback, but I could get WMV9 files to playback. I tried a DivX file in a AVI extension and it played fine.

I write this review with a heavy heart, because I have to admit, when it was working, I was in love with the z545. It was, hands down, the coolest piece of technology I had ever purchased. The dual DVR was phenomenal, easy to use, and produced a MUCH better picture through DVI video outputs than my Tivo Series 2 (which still can support only the awful composite video standard). Adding and viewing photos and videos was simple, DVD picture was fantastic, HP Tunes worked great.
All in all, I waas ecstatic over the z545 ... until the problems began. The first was that, when using the z545 in "computer mode" (e.g., surfing the internet, etc. through XP), the screen image was cropped off on all four sides so that the start bar, task bar, icons, etc. were all offscreen. I read all the FAQs, guides, and spent hours with HP technical support (who, to their credit, genuinely tried hard to fix the problem). Nothing worked, and ultimately the only solution HP could come up with was either to use an S-video cable in place of DVI (which would ruin the picture quality for TV and all the other non-PC options) or to turn down the resolution on my TV (a similar non-solution). I have a widescreen, 16X9 big screen rear projection HDTV, and I cannot believe that HP did not provide for its "media center" that is supposed to replace all your home theatre pieces to work with such a TV -- who do they think is buying the z545 if not a technophile home theatre buff?? -- but, alas, they could not find a solution.
Nonetheless, I might have been able to live with less with less than optimal PC performance from the z545 because all of the media center features were, in a word, phenomenal. However, even in Media Center mode, I started encountering too many glitches, e.g., the machine would freeze coming out of sleep mode, it would lock up when changing channels, and it would sometimes "change" the channel only to replace it with a blank screen while channel surfing.
These glitches were just too many and too frequent to let me keep a toy that cost me $1800. Such a shame, because when working the z545 was a dream. Five stars when it worked, but in the end just too glitchy to keep. I returned it after a week and a half and almost daily troubleshooting. In a few generations it will be a must-have product, but right now, in my experience, the reliability and stability just is not there.

Cisco-Linksys Media Center Extender Review

It plays our recorded TV, pictures, DVDs ripped to XviD (not DVDs in the player), and music from the other room with an interface that looks just like Vista Media Center. Wife acceptance factor = high. We are using wired ethernet (100) and a 1080p tv via HDMI. The supplied remote is good. Speed of menus is acceptable (even faster, if you turn off transitions in the setup). FF, rewind, pause, etc. are all fine for Live/Recorded HD TV -- looks perfect on our 1080p tv.
XviD files are a little slow to start up on the DMA2100.
I had realistic expectations and we are happy!
NOTE: This note is ONLY for people with a Linksys Etherfast DSL/Cable router. If you have that router, your computer will not detect the DMA2100 unless you also go into the router setup and set Filter Multicast to Disable (which is NOT the default). Thanks for wasting my time, Linksys. After the change, it works great.

I don't want to repeat too much what others have already listed. The unit works great for playing your home videos you converted to DVDs just like you're using a DVD player and you don't need to convert any files(provided they are in the standard DVD format ifo, VOB etc) them just copy them off your DVD and you can have access to all your memories. I click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file and it plays just like I had the DVD in menus and all.
Now for the problem. The unit does not recognize the FreeAgent Go drives. Dock the drive to it and it does not know a drive is there. I purchased both the unit and a FreeAgent Go drive in the last 2 months. The drive arrived yesterday. I had been using a flashdrive up until now using the USB port. Now I wish I did not buy this unit. Unfortunately, the only place people were talking about this issue was on Seagate's website in the forum section. If you can't dock your external hard drive to it, it's not of much use. Perhaps earlier models worked but in this economy many firms went cheap and perhaps Seagate has done this too. It was just too good to be true and I have relied on Seagate for storage for years, and now they have let me down.
***Update, Seagate initiated contact with me and appears may be taking care of the issue. I will update. So far their customer service has been very proactive and they initiated contact with me based on my discussion about it and how many firms do that!**** Seagate did replace the drive based on comments I wrote in a forum. I also purchased another unit for $29 (no drive included) on sale Jan 2010. Both units working well but you may need to use a USB cable to use a larger Go Drive.

Bose® CineMate® Digital Home Theater Speaker System Review

I am very pleased with the sound quality of the Bose Cinemate 2.1 system. The key to gettting the best sound quality is to follow the instructions and disable you TV's speakers, and set the audio output to 'fixed.' Prior to doing that the bass seemed very low. As soon as I made that change, WOW! what a system. I suspect others who have given the system a low rating may have not had the system set up properly. While you can set it up easily with just a few connections, it it important to adjust your TV's audio to ensure you are hearing that unparalled Bose sound.
