The Rolling Stones - Four Flicks (2003) Review

The Rolling Stones - Four Flicks (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
the four flicks dvd is simply great. it takes you in the back stage, in the studio where the stones rehearsed, it takes on stage for three very different concerts in New York, London and Paris.
It gives a good sense of how good the band is: the Stones are just excellent: very energetic and very inspired.
It's very hard to tell which of the three concert is the best. I should probably say the concert at the Madison Square Garden (first dvd) or the one in London's Twickenham Stadium. In both concerts the Stones performed some of their most solid rock: Jumpin'Jack Flash, Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women and so on.
But the concert in Paris is interesting for other reasons: Charlie Watts saying to the public that he wanted to sing a song but Mick Jagger would not let him (a joke that made everybody laugh) and Keith Richards singing Hoagy Carmicheal's Nearness of You (a song that Keith had recorded many years before, that can be heard in the soundtrack of the movie Basquiat).
It's a wonderful wonderful dvd set. It's a great document of the Stones for the ages.

Davy Jones' Locker (1995) Review

This package includes enough entertainment for several children ranging in age from 2 to 9. The video is charming and filled with enough songs to keep even mom and dad humming. The unstated message is that books are knowledge, and knowledge is power! A child who reads is ahead of the game. The puzzles and crayons included with the video are a bonus for rainy days. The treasure chest that everything comes in is the most valued possesion of one of my youngsters. I recommend purchase of this item highly.

The Dining Room Review

The Dining Room
Average Reviews:

This Great Performances work from PBS takes place in the dining room of a grand home. The six actor emsemble play multiple roles in a series of vignettes which address the passing of a way of life that is priveledged and traditional.
The play is a poignant interplay between parents, sons and daughters, inlaws and friends and addresses changing social mores all within the context of the dining room. It is a stunning performance and will bring nostalgic memories to anyone who grew up among a tradition of formal dining, strict etiquette, and social directives. The play illustrates the glory and the pettiness that comes from wealth and privelege.
I recommend it highly.

At the end of 18th century Russian count Nikolai Ryazanov loses his beloved wife. He gives himself over to a cause of organizing a naval expedition to establish a trade link between Russia and California. On arrival he falls in love with Spanish governors daughter.
This play was enourmously popular in Russia running for 2 decades. Primarily a love story it is also a historical allegory commenting on the cold war politics of the era. It is not a typical rock opera as it blends rock with Russian Orthodox chants and period music. It is a unique experience, beautiful, fateful, tragic, colorful and rich.

No zone restriction Rock Opera, Musical, Russia , 1996, 86 min Format: Wide screen, 16:9 Audio: Russian DD 5.1, DTS, PCM Stereo Subtitles: No subtitles The plot of the opera is based on the fate of Russian Chamberlain Count Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov. In 1806 he undertook a trip on sails "Juno" and "Avos" to California (In Russian the word "avos" means "perhaps", and sometimes "good luck"). After a rough passage over the Pacific Ocean Rezanov landed in a Spanish settlement near a monastery belonging to the order of St. Francis of Alssisi. The Russians got rather hostile greeting by Jose de Arguello, the Governor of San Francisco, who planned a ball in his house in honour of his sixteen-year-old daughter Conception de Arguello. At the ball Rezanov was introduced to Conchita. At night in the garden Rezanov heard Conchita and Federico's talk about their future betrothal, but he could not overcome the feeling, which seized him. Rezanov penetrated into Conchita's bedroom, at first he begged her for love, but later in spite of her despair he took her by force. After that good luck left Rezanov. The Russian-American Company's commercial ties went to rack and ruin. Scandal and rumors caused by Rezanov's dishonorable deed, made the Russians return to their ships and leave San Francisco. After a secret betrothal ceremony Rezanov started his trip home. In Siberia near Krasnoyarsk he caught a cold and died. Conchita for a long time did not believe reports about Rezanov's death and was waiting for him more than 30 years. At last she took a vow of silence, which she kept for the remainder of her days. She died in a cell of convent in San Francisco. Director: Mark Zakharov Cast: Nikolay Karatchencov, Anna Bolshova, Viktor Rakov, Dmitry Marianov, Pavel Smeyan, Gennady Trofimov

I have the entire Lucy video collection and love it! I am such a Lucy fan that I nick-named my 2 boisterous granddaughters "Lucy and Ethel" (these 2 girls are forever getting into trouble). Lucy brings on the laughs almost from the very beginning. No one can twirl spaghetti on a fork like her! With John Wayne, she is in rare form. Anyone would be proud to own and share these videos. They definitely don't come close to anyone duplicating her. What a lady!

Tantalus Review

Tantalus
Average Reviews:

The subject of this documentary is the evolution of an amazing 10-hour play, premiered in Denver in 2000. A Google search on the internet will provide contemporary review: audiences raved despite the incredible ticket price, the 10 am to 10:30 pm running time, with two meal breaks. The story is based on an amalgam of Greek myth, centered around yet another human tortured by the Gods, this time, with thirst. The play uses every imaginable resource available to modern theater: masks, giant puppets, contemporary characters, gods and goddesses, a stage covered in sand with a pool in it and assembles an international array of theater technicians, each to provide their unique take on costumes, lighting, puppetry, music, set design etc. Knowing that it was spectacularly successful doesn't prevent the viewer of this documentary from sharing the tension, raw panic, primal fear etc. shared by all the professionals that this might just not work--or it will work in an unimaginable way. I saw it when it appeared on PBS in Dec 2001 and rewatched my tape many times before I wore it out. it's great to have it available on DVD.

A fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at one of the most talked about theatre events of our time - Tantalus, the ten-hour, nine-play cycle written by Royal Shakespeare Company co-founder John Barton and directed by Sir Peter Hall. The filmmakers take a "no-holds-barred" approach, exposing the fears, creative tensions and euphoric breakthroughs through the rehearsal period. We are present for the volcanic conflicts between author and director, the grueling rehearsals, the resignations, the schedule havoc, and finally the triumphant opening night. The film team was granted full access, roaming freely through rehearsal halls, climbing catwalks as they captured the gargantuan challenges of mounting this epic reinvention of the ancient Greek myths. 2 DVDs (00314650) or 2 Videos (00314649). 1 hour, 54 minutes.

The Patriots (Broadway Theatre Archive) Review

The Patriots (Broadway Theatre Archive)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here's a little-known gem from 1976.
"The Patriots" tells the tale of a struggling, post-Revolution America from Thomas Jefferson's point of view. Easily on a par with the more famous musical "1776", this serious drama outlines Jefferson's conflict with the philosphy of Alexander Hamilton (Philip LeStrange).
The performances are top notch, especially Jefferson (Robert Murch) and Washington (Ralph Clanton). Both forefathers spring to life under the steady hands of the actors who portray them. You'll be hard pressed to find a better or more memorable portrayal of these two men once you sample "The Patriots". Madison, Monroe and Hamilton also become real human beings, in place of the marble statuary we are so used to.
Also of note is the accurate depiction of the little-known danger facing the young American nation in the 1780's-90's, as forces conspire to impose a monarchy and dissolve the Constitution. Jefferson helped to stem the tide, and his role in that conflict is ably demonstrated here.
There is some minor television-acceptable cursing, but nothing kids can't handle today. Kids ought to watch this anyway, as it makes history come alive in ways that books sometimes cannot.
The transfer here is excellent, so you won't suffer the common video errors from some poorer transfers to DVD. If you like Jefferson, Revolutionary Era history, or just good theatre, this one's a keeper.

By Sidney Kingsley. This play is a "gutsy, real look" at the bitter discord between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton in the early days of the Republic (New York Post). The play focuses on the conflict between the political and social goals of these two brilliant men: Jefferson, the far-sighted, egalitarian-minded democrat; and Hamilton, the short-tempered federalist with limited faith in the common man.

Lullaby (Broadway Theatre Archive) (1960) Review

Lullaby (Broadway Theatre Archive) (1960)

I liked Lullaby but I would loved it in color. But watching Ruth White at 46 years old play the overbearing mother-in-law and mother to Eli Wallach and his real-life wife Anne Jackson is quite entertaining. I work in Ruth's hometown of Perth Amboy, New Jersey and I ordered Lullaby to give away as Christmas presents because even though Ruth died prematurely at 55 years old in 1969. This is one of her best performances! If you like watching a real-life married couple like Eli and Anne. Remember they have been married at least 50 years and in this business, that is quite an accomplishment for this New York acting couple. Sadly, Ruth never married nor had any children. Acting was her life. She postponed her career to care for her aging parents. Ruth was special that way! By her thirties, she returned to acting in New York City and on Broadway but always came home to Perth Amboy, New Jersey. If you like Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach, you will love seeing them together in their younger days. If you like the overbearing mother-in-law in this production, you will love Ruth White's performance.

Veteran husband-and-wife acting team, Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson, star as a 38-year-old truck driver and a weary cigarette girl from a nightclub who elope and discover they know very little about each other in Don Appell’s bittersweet 1954 Broadway comedy. The mama’s boy’s domineering mother gives them no peace or privacy on their honeymoon and soon the marriage turns into the eternal triangle -- with his mother as the "other woman."

Hub Culture Retrospectives: Antarctica combines awe-inspiring views of the South Pole with a hypnotic musical score based on sounds from nature. The video is a series of single-frame shots flowing from one to the other. Each frame focuses on one profound element of the landscape thus highlighting it's extreme environment and profoundness. Adding to the visual experience are sounds of rainfall lightly falling, glaciers creaking and penguins pruning likely to make the viewer fall into a trance-like state. The experience is akin to a visual massage of the soul.Stan Stalnaker has effectively captured the true essence of Antarctica while giving us a deeper understanding of our vast planet and perhaps of ourselves. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone looking for a unique visual experience to share with friends or simply to enjoy alone.

Lear '87 Archive (Condensed) Review

Lear '87 Archive (Condensed)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mabou Mines' Lear was much discussed when it opened because it featured a stellar cast of some of America's greatest stage actors but the production was leaden, literal, and cliche ridden. How does bad theater happen to great artists? This video is a fascinating fly-on-the-wall look at how it happens.
The video vividly turns the team behind the production into a vivid cast of characters. Director Lee Breuer's constant and confident reiteration of misinformation (such as that many scholars think that the fool was played by Shakespeare's lover) becomes a running gag. Ruth Malezech's compulsive peacemaking, Isabel Monks no-nonsense orneriness and Karen-Kendall's deer-in-the-headlights conscientiousness make them all fascinating character studies.
It is disheartening that the actors bold and fascinating readings of their roles in the first hour become bad cartoons by the end, but what a fascinating lesson to see the process by which it happened. The actors usually refer to family and people they have known when discussing Lear. Breuer usually only refers to film, television and "archetypes." Bit by bit he wears them down, convincing them to go for stereotype over reality, and it is an amazing thing to watch.

Jill Godmilow's six-hour archive of the Mabou Mines ensemble's controversial 1990, gender-reversed production of Shakespeare's King Lear documents the first two-week workshop on the play at the Theatrical Outfit in Atlanta. Director Lee Breuer and the cast are seen working on transposing the play to 1950's America in this intimate record of a master class in avant-garde performance work. Taken from over 100 hours of material, this condensed archive comes with a 32-page handbook with guides for tracking the production.

Martial Arts Theater #3: The Hot, The Cool and the Vicious/He Has Nothing but Kung Fu Review

Martial Arts Theater #3: The Hot, The Cool and the Vicious/He Has Nothing but Kung Fu
Average Reviews:

Two fine, old-school king fu films. Note, however, only "He has Nothing but Kung Fu" stars Gordon Liu. What ploys distributers won't try to sell their items! (Also see my review of "Raiders of Buddhist Kung Fu.") "The Hot, the Cool and the Vicious" stars the great leg fighter, Tao-liang (Delon) Tan.
The former is about the son of a magistrate (Liu) who suffers from amnesia, and gets tangled up in the antics of a con-man (the guy who co-starred with Liu in "Dirty Ho"--a wonderful film!) and the injustices of a local crime ring. In the processs the amnesiatic and martial arts proficient Liu unwittingly becomes a Robin Hood-like character. As always, Gordon Liu delivers. This film lacks the "feel" of Liu's later Shaw Brothers productions, but it is still very worthwhile. ****
The latter is about an honest, upright "sheriff" (Tan) of a Chinese town, a mysterious, transient ex-convict, a brothel keeper, a local crime boss and his counterfeiting ring. This film has a great American Western flair to it, and is my favorite Delon Tan film; even his English-dubbed voice is very suitable to him. Great fights, winsome characters, heroics, subplots and funny--but apt--dubbing mark this classic. The blond-haired villian sounds like he's talking through a tin can, but strangely it all seems to fit well in this film. I actually like this film more than "He has Nothing but Kung Fu." *****
(**** + *****)/2 = 4.5 stars.
Top shelf for sure!

This tends to get a bit dry at times, focusing too much on the landscape and giving a bit too much info about minute details that don't show us much about Ibsen; however, it was great for introducing high school students to the context in which Ibsen lived.

'Drawing on old maps, contemporary drawings and paintings, portraits and other archive material, the excellent Famous Authors series not only presents a factual outline of the writers lives, but also conveys a clear visual picture of the social and historical background to their writing. Recommended for all ages.' THE GOOD BOOK GUIDE Norwegian-born playwright Henrik Ibsen is considered one of the most influential writers of the post-Romanticism era. Although early on he studied to become a pharmacist and later a physician, his pursuits turned to writing and he traveled extensively in Europe where he staged numerous plays to much public acclaim. His work examines themes such as morality, social class issues, social reform, and liberation found in works such as A Doll's House and An Enemy of the People. His works are still popular productions for stage and screen.

It was a rare thing in 1974 to record a live Broadway show--the practice was myopically blocked by unions for years. It must have been clear to all involved that this was a special event. Fonda's genius is in no way dimmed by his age. He brings Darrow to life with heart and humor... and just a little deviltry. (I saw the actual production as well--and still have the program autographed by Mr. Fonda.) This is a fine performance of a fine play, and a living document of theatical history.

This is a review of the first segment of the show, the interview with Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. at that time, Dore Gold. The interview took place ten years from the time I am writing this review. Rose asks Gold about how much land Israel is willing to give the Palestinians now at this stage of the Oslo negotiations. Gold points out that the Palestinians have not kept their basic obligations in the agreement, namely, fighting against Terror. He points out that they recently released the mastermind of the bombing of Dizengoff Center in Tel Aviv. Gold suggests that instead of being given 'peace for land' the Palestinians have been giving 'terror for land'. Rose presses Gold about making more concessions but Gold points out the absurdity of making further demands upon the one side of the agreement which is keeping it while leaving the other to go on making its violations.
How sad. Here we are ten years later. The situation has only worsened during this time. The Palestinians have gone even further in the direction of Terrorism.
Gold makes a clear and convincing presentation of the Israeli case.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Shorts 2/Catalina Caper/Skydivers Review

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Shorts 2/Catalina Caper/Skydivers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Catalina Caper is by far one of the funniest and cleverest episodes of MST3K. The movie itself is so bad it's funny, and the crew of the SOL take every advantage. Highlights include Tom Servo singing Creepy Girl, and the host segment where Joel and the 'Bots argue about the plot (as if the movie has one) is hilarious. Look out for Little Richard, the only person in the film with any talent. Unfortunately, his appearance is brief.
Skydivers is also very funny. Mike and the 'Bots provide many laughs during the riveting inaction of the film. This film contains many dull scenes such as a long conversation which revolves around having coffee, and the sociopathic stereotypes in the film provide a few laughs of their own. Fortunately, the crew of the SOL really "milk" the coffee conversation for many wonderful jokes throughout. Coleman Francis, who wrote other "gems" like Beast of Yucca Flats, wrote the screenplay and it shows.
As for Shorts 2, all I can say is that MST3K never met a short at which they didn't hurl good jokes. Catching Trouble and Keeping Neat and Clean are two of the "best of the best." MSTies who've never seen the episodes containing these shorts should not miss the chance to see these now.
