Sony BDP-S300 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Review

Not exactly a product review as you already have dozens of them. If you are undecided because of some of the negative things said, let me show you the light. It's blu!
I bought this player with the 2.0 firmware and it was great. Yes, it did take a very long time to load Pirates of the Caribbean - almost 3 full minutes. That is due to the disc heavily using Java (BD-J) for interactivity. I flash update to new firmware in about 10 minutes. See Sony's web site for the firmware and carefully follow the instructions. They will even provide you with the disc.
Keep in mind these things are essentially customized single purpose computers. The firmware is simply reprogramming them to include more functions, become more stable, etc. It is only limited by the existing hardware.
After the update, it still takes 45 seconds to turn on, but that is down from about 1 minute. Pirates of the Caribbean now loads in 1 minute 11 seconds. All my non-BD-J movies now start up in +/- 30 seconds.
BD-J load times may seem outlandish compared to DVD, But remember, future firmware updates can only improve things. We may or may not see further improved load times and that depends on the existing hardware. Any playback issues with movies will always be rectified by new firmware. Sony is showing great support.
In short, this is a second generation player and minor issues do exist. But you won't have to live with them forever. Firmware fixes all, and helps the longevity of your player. Remember that extended load times is normal for some titles, but within acceptable range for this player because it is "The Tank". It's not obsolete, just update the firmware!
Updated Addendum October 2010: The latest 5.50 firmware update further enhances BD-J, and still supports BD-R/RE playback ability. Fastest load times ever for BD-J discs. Some significantly so, others by seconds. Load times for all BD-J movies should improve. Menu selection has never been this smooth and responsive. The newest feature "Adds Dolby® TrueHD Audio decoding functionality". Fixes playback freezing issues with movies like Wall-E. BEST FIRMWARE YET!
====================================================================
Here is my suggested "Load Time Performance Table".
* Non BD-J loading in 35 seconds or less. Excellent.
* BD-J up to 75 seconds. Very Good.
* BD-J 76 to 90 seconds. Good. (Tolerable Threshold)
* BD-J 91 to 100 seconds. Very Fair
* BD-J 101 to 120 seconds. Fair.
* BD-J over 120 seconds. Poor.
* BD-J over 180 seconds. Very Poor.

Jensen Vm9312 7-Inch Motorized Touch Screen Multimedia Receiver Review

Some might consider this a lower end product, due to the fact that it's about half the price of it's nearest competition. Rest assured, the 'cheap' stigma is in price alone. It's an easy to use, easy to adjust, and fun to use deck that even the least tech-savvy of car owners can operate easily.
First off, I was surprised at how good the picture is. I never feel like I'm watching on a tiny screen, or squinting to make out details. The sound is also good, although at times during dvd playback, I thought it was a bit quiet. I haven't tried using a satellite radio or iPod yet, but for cd and mp3-cd playback it worked well, with great options for navigating through folders.
Few warnings for those thinking of buying this product;
-Player automatically reverts to full volume after being powered down. Can be a bit of a shocker if you're not ready for it.
-When going into the input menu or setup menu, there's a break in the audio for about 1-1.5 seconds. This isn't really a big deal, but is becoming more and more annoying the more it happens.
-It has some trouble recognizing the track title of most store bought discs, substituting song names with "Track 1, Track 2" etc... Not an issue with mp3 discs with ID3 tags.
-There's no option to fast-forward an mp3. I thought this would be a big deal, which prevented me from buying this deck for a while. Not really an issue.
Considering the price, it's a really decent deck. Intuitive controls, easy installation, and fun to show off. Other than a few minor (and probably easily remedied) issues, I'd definitely recommend this deck.

Well, I researched it and got this one. For the price I really have no complaints. It may lack a few features like screen savers and all that, but it is actually a really good sounding unit. I love the music videos off of my ipod. (Yes the parking brake "bypass" from the vm9213 does work with this unit) Overall I would say I am extremely happy with my purchase.

I purchased this hoping it would be a good add-on to my Mac mini... not to PLAY Blu-ray discs, but to RIP them to MKV files (using MakeMKV). Fortunately, it works great!
Not only is the setup crazy stupid easy (one Y-cable... two USB into the mini, one mini-USB into the drive), but there's no software to begin using it; the drive is recognized instantly and you can begin reading discs.
Again, this is NOT for watching movies directly from the Blu-ray disc on your Mac -- Blu-ray is still a "bag of hurt" according Jobs, so until Apple builds that into the OS, it'll be a short ride.
But if you want to rip the Blu-Ray to your Mac (and use MakeMKV or AirVideo to watch/convert), it works fabulously.

When I ordered the Micca Mplay, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I wanted to make this video review so that other Amazon shoppers could see what they're getting. All in all, I do like it and I'm glad I made the purchase. With that being said, it's not a perfect device but it does the job:
Pros:
* The price was reasonable.
* Plays most of the Standard Definition file types (I use it mainly for AVI files)
* Fast startup time.
* Plays MP3s.
* The remote control has been responsive. Great for when you don't feel like getting off the couch.
Cons:
* I've had problems with the fast-forward/rewind features. Once in a while this will actually cause the file to stop playing, which is annoying when you're already 20 minutes into a video.
* It doesn't play High Definition file types. I knew this when I bought it, but it would be a nice feature to have. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who wants to easily play video files on their TV. If you have a High Definition TV, spring for a player that supports high definition files and HDMI.
