The Ten Commandments: The Musical Review

I wanted to see this but since I've rarely left Texas, I had to settle to get the movie. Val Kilmer is one of my favorite actors of all time. Adam Lambert is currently on American Idol and didn't know he was in the movie until I heard him sing "Is Anybody Listening". It goves me goosebumps. I love the dancing!! The plot shows the love of mothers, the cruelty of the Pharoh and how God can harden and soften other's hearts for certain things to happen. There is one song that I don't really care for and that's "The Glory of Ra". I just realized who that guy is! The man who plays Rmases is also Raoul from The Phantom of The Opera from 2004! No wonder he looked familiar! The women were AMAZING! Now all I have to do is buy the Soundtrack because I get songs in my head randomly. Do they sound the same on the CD as they do in the film? Must investigate.

The Producers (Deluxe Edition) (1968) Review

The Producers (Deluxe Edition) (1968)
Average Reviews:

This is it! The source, THE PRODUCERS, the 1968 release with screenplay and direction by Mel Brooks, juicy parts by Zero Mostel, Gene Wilder, Kenneth Mars and others, and a well-deserved reputation as one of the funniest movie comedies ever. Filmed on a pittance (less than $1 million, cheap even by Sixties standards), THE PRODUCERS almost died unrecognized until it became a cult hit in New York, L.A., Chicago and then, everywhere.
SPOILER GRAF: The plot is brilliantly diabolical: a corrupt Broadway producer (Zero Mostel) and his nebbishy accountant assistant (Gene Wilder) deliberately oversell a play with the design to create a flop and keep the proceeds. They hire the worst possible playwright, director, and choreographer and deliberately insult the drama critics. But the play is so hilariously awful it becomes awfully hilarious. The essence of 1960s camp: It's good because it's so bad.
It's hard to overstate just how good Mel Brooks' first movie is. The low budget forced a lot of outside shooting in New York City, and as a result the movie looks fresh, not cosmetized. The premise of a play about "Adolf and Eva in a gay romp at Berchtesgaden" was, if anything, more offensive just 23 years after the end of the Second World War than it is today. A big gamble on Brooks' part, but it played.
This edition is well worth the extra couple of dollars over the "movie only" version. It includes a second CD, apparently put together about the time of the 2001 Broadway musical, and contains stills, bios, and an engaging documentary about the film's making and reception. The last is especially fun since all the principals involved (except the late Zero Mostel) are alive and active and possessed of strong memories of that "kooky" classic-in-the-making.
The 2005 movie with Broadway vets Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick is proving a disappointment to those who remember the original movie or the 2001 Broadway smash. The new movie took the Broadway book and set it in an imagined-and expensive--"indeterminate past" full of late 1950s cars and fashions. Unfortunately, what works on the stage doesn't always translate on film, and despite all the talent and money involved, the new movie comes across as stagey, self-absorbed and at times a bit labored. And LONG: half again as long as this original, which clocks in right at an hour and a half.
The verdict: All versions of THE PRODUCERS are funny, but the 1968 movie is the one to start with. Enjoy it now at a great price.

A "startling, stunning, outrageous [and] breathtaking debut" (Los Angeles Times) from acclaimed writer/director Mel Brooks (Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs), this Oscar®-winning* comedy combines "pure pell-Mel lunacy [and] wild, ad-lib energy [into an] uproariously funny" (Time) film!Low-rent Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) and his high-strung accountant, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), discover that, with the help of a few gullible investors, they can make more money on a flop than on a hit! Armed with the worst show ever written ("Springtime for Hitler") and an equally horrific cast, this double-dealing duo is banking on disaster. But when their sure-to-offend musical becomes a surprise smash hit, they find themselves in the middleof a Broadway blitzkrieg!*1968: Original Screenplay

The Fabric of a Man is one of David Talbert's best musical stage plays. It's the story of Dominique (Tammy Townsend - Family Matters, she played Eddie's girlfriend Greta), an up and coming fashion designer who thinks she is in love with Blair Godfrey (Clifton Powell), a self-centered stockbroker who wishes she'd focus less on her career and more on him. Dominique's employee (Buddy Lewis)forgot to take the dry cleaning to the cleaners and her regular cleaners is closed, she accidentally stumbles into an old-school dry cleaner, where she meets Joshua King (Darren DeWitt Henson - Soul Food), who has similar career goals. Joshua is a devout christian who doesn't make a move without God, their first date was dinner and church.
Dominique can't make up her mind about who's better for her, Blair who represents finance or Joshua who will give her the best of both worlds; love and a chance to explore her career goals. Dominique is forced to decide which man/fabric wears best on her.

The Yogi Bear Show - The Complete Series (1961) Review

The Yogi Bear Show - The Complete Series (1961)

Having only watched the Yogi Bear show in reruns in the 70's which only featured Yogi and not Snagglepuss or Yakky (although I did see those as well, here and there) I was surprised to find that the Yogi Bear Complete Series didn't have all of the Yogi cartoons I knew and loved as a kid. I realize NOW that the original show featured one cartoon of Yogi, one of Snagglepuss and one of Yakky Doodle and that's exactly what this compilation is. It isn't 33 cartoons of just Yogi.
Some of my favorites that AREN'T in this compilation are - The 222 Tudor Terrace episode, Quaba Quaba Kitty Kitty episode, Yogi flying the helicopter, Yogi and Super Highway, "When are they going to fix these...bumpy roads?" episode etc.
If you want ALL of the Yogi episodes that you know and love you'll have to buy this DVD and the HuckleBerry Hound Complete Series which features Yogi, Huck and Pixie & Dixie. This isn't a particular hardship since I'd love to see some old Pixie and Dixie, so it's a moot point. But some might be confused as I was to discover they weren't all in this series. I guess WB knew no one was going to buy Snagglepuss or Yakky Doodle the Complete Series....
I just wanted to point out that Yogi purists will have to buy two series to get all of the Yogi cartoons you know and love.

Nederlands Dans theater Celebrates Jiri Kylian (1998) Review

I purchased this DVD with great expectations. I love to watch dances, especially the ones choregraphed by Jilian, performed by NDT in particular. However, this DVD was a bit disappointing. I think the director was trying to do *too much*. There are way too frequent special effects and camera view point changes, which actually ruins the *essence* of dance, in my humble opinion. It wasn't bad, but just not as exciting as the other Jilian DVDs I purchased..

Count Dracula (BBC Mini-Series) Review

Count Dracula (BBC Mini-Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first saw this version of "Dracula" on PBS back in the 70's (shortly after having read the novel) and thought it a wondererful (albeit a little stiff) and very faithful film adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic gothic novel. Of course there have been hundreds of films featuring Count Dracula down through the ages but very few of them adhered closely to the orignal source material. In fact most of them just borrowed a few key characters and maybe a plot thread or two and then just created their own story. Thankfully the BBC decided to rectify matters by filming their own adaptation for television and this is the first film that I am aware of that really does stay true to the novel. In fact this was the first film to show many of the famous scenes from the novel that previous films had ignored. Namely the scenes of Dracula crawling down the castle walls and a very controversial (at the time) scene where the Count offers a baby to his three vampire brides.
Now keep in mind this is 70's era BBC televsision. While the acting is quite good some of the other production values are not going to be of the same quality that many of today's viewing audiences are used to. For example many of the exterior scenes are filmed outdoors while the interior scenes are filmed on sets. Consequently there is going to be some sequences with a certain stagey quality to them. Some of the special effects shots are going to be...well, lets just say not all that special. Now having said all that I still can tell you that there are more chills to be had from this version than the BBC's most recent and very disapointing adaptation of "Dracula". In fact, I'll go so far as to say that this version is even better than Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula". I never really cared for Coppola's version anyway but I will give it high marks for production values. One of the big mistakes with Coppola's film was the changing of Dracula's character from Stoker's concept of evil vampire to that of a silly, romantic love-struck vampire. Louis Jourdan (Gigi, Octopussy) does a fine job as the Count despite the fact that he is one of the few things in the film that doesn't quite mesh with Stoker's original concept. He does however convey very well that strange dichotomy of vampires. Namely the sensual yet evil qualities we've come to expect from many other screen Dracula's.
To sum up: this film may be cheap in the production values department but if you are looking for a version that is faithful to Stoker's original story, character and concepts then you are on the right track with this offering from 70's era BBC. There's lots of atmosphere and plenty of good chills to be had from this version despite the shortcomings it may have.

This fan favorite three-part series from the BBC is now available on DVD for the first time! Louis Jourdan stars as the deliciously blood-thirsty Count Dracula in this version of Bram Stoker's horror classic. Keeping close to the original novel, the series begins with Jonathan Harker visiting the Count in Transylvania to help him with preparations to move to England. It is in the Count's castle that Jonathan becomes a prisoner, and discovers Dracula's true nature. Many scenes shot on location -- such as the Gothic graveyard of London's Highgate Cemetery -- add extra atmosphere to an already powerful production.
