It Might Get Loud (2008) Review

Caught this film yesterday and all I can say is wow. If you like music, guitars or any combination of the two catch this one on the big screen. Then you can easily decide if you need to add this dvd to your music archives. The progression of stories and how they are told is excellent, as well as the music presented. [...]
I came here yesterday after getting home from the matinee to see if there might be a "soundtrack" available to accompany this movie. There's probably enough material here (Link Wray, Son House etc.) to make a sweet multi-disc collection. It may seem like an odd combination of guitar players, but all three are well represented and there are too many highlights to mention. Seeing these guys playing bottleneck slide guitar together on "In My Time Of Dying" is worth the price of admission by itself. Seeing this film was a joyful experience for me and my heart does a little happy dance just thinking about it.

The D returns in the follow-up to the under appreciated movie/album "The Pick of Destiny" which, even though it tanked at the theatres, totally rocked and should definately become a cult classic. This new set gives us an excellent live concert featuring a full band, incredible live versions of "Tribute", "Friendship", "Kickapoo" (Great vocals by Kyle, and oh, the other guy, too!). These guys have never sounded better! Rage Cage's incredible guitar work deserves a mention here. This guy is a master on the acoustic guitar! The bonus disc includes a behind the scenes documentary that fans of the band will enjoy. Near the end of this, we get some insight into the creative process and are treated as the D performs a new song which is, well, incedible! I hope this song makes it onto a new album soon! Overall, I would highly reccomend this DVD to fans of the band or fans of rock music in general. Long Live the D!

Passing Strange Review

I also saw the show on Broadway in 2008 and absolutely loved it. I was excited to hear that Spike Lee had filmed the last performance on Broadway and that it was planned for a DVD release. However, I was skeptical - the show was so high energy and engaging; I didn't know if it would translate to the small screen.
I saw the film at SXSW 2009 and thought that Lee did an excellent job at capturing the energy and emotion of the show. There were times when I was dancing in my seat - the same points where I was dancing in my seat at the Belasco. You may not have heard of this show, but I encourage you to get the DVD and see for yourself - it's really good. It'll be well-worth the cost of the DVD.

Passing Strange The Movie tells the semi-autobiographical story of a young black man who leaves behind his middle-class, church-ruled upbringing in mid-1970s Los Angeles to travel to Europe in search of his artistic and personal identity, or what he calls the real. Picaresque misadventures with sex, drugs, politics, and art await him in far-out Amsterdam and hyper-militant Berlin. His eyes are opened ever wider, even revealing what he left behind. An absolutely superb cast, ably supported by sparing (but pitch-perfect) costumes, design, and stagecraft, bring to life the emotionally charged story with its astounding original music, narrated and overseen by Stew himself. Lee s multicamera coverage of the event (including backstage scenes) involves the audience in not only the text but the electricity of the ensemble s onstage adventure. Passing Strange The Movie is a tour-de-force of creative collaboration and inspiration.
