Dazzle Multimedia DM-5400 Digital Video Creator 80 Review

I am writing this to hopefully save others some of the trial-and-error that I went through. This is a great product for the money and I would buy it again! Like others have said, the VideoWave software packaged with the device is not the best for capturing video. But, better software can be had for FREE. For capturing video, I used VirtualDub to capture files as AVIs. I used TMPGEnc to convert the AVIs to VCD compliant MPGs. The Nero software that came with my CD burner was producing horrible results when it had to perform the conversions. I have dubbed DVDs and VHS with very good results. Following the methodology I have listed below, I can produce VCDs with a quality that can be compared to video tape....
1) Capture the video as an AVI file using VirtualDub with 29.97 frame rate, MPEG4 codec V1 video compression, CD quality audio compression.
- Don't use the audio inputs on the Dazzle unit. Instead, directly wire it into the Mic input of the PC with a Y-patch cord.
- Use S-Video cable over RCA cable where possible.
2) Convert the AVI file to an MPG using TMPGEnc with Video CD NTSC setting and motion search precision set to 'highest quality(very slow)'
- TMPGEnc allows you to pull sections out of the source AVI to divide files longer than 70 minutes into two or more MPGs.
- Expect the conversion to take three to four times the time length of the file
3) Burn the CD with Nero in VCD mode using the MPGs from step 2.
PS - the VideoWave software that comes with Dazzle is great for editing home video that has already been captured. When producing the final file to burn on VCD, do not use its VCD settings. Produce it as an uncompressed AVI and follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Bretford KW-6 Projection Screen Wall Mounting Bracket (White) Review

I've used these brackets many times to hang screens for some pretty discerning folks, they are always a hit.
The color is neutral, they are sturdy and easy to mount with 2 fasteners for each. There's no template included, but it's easy to just hold up the bracket and mark the wall.
Always happy with Amazon's selection and service!

Xitel Moviecenter for iPod Review

Xitel Moviecenter for iPod

I have a third generation iPod nano that I use to load up with video clips that I download from the web or from Tivo. I have hooked up the Moviecenter to an old TV in the basement that I have set up as part of an exercise area. Now I can watch the iPod while working out. The Moviecenter remote works fine for sound, pause, fast forward, reverse. While it is little pricey ($50 would be a better price point) it does what it says it will do.

Carry handle was a definite plus. Weight not a problem. The tilt screen was very good to eliminate 'keystoning' of image. An absolute must for projectors without compensators. Very easy to set up and take down.

Torpedo Entertainment Digital Movie Projector 72"" Review

Torpedo Entertainment Digital Movie Projector 72

Bought this as a gift to be given for occasional use in a camper. After pre-testing, I'm happy with the performance. Elsewhere on the interweb the resolution is incorrectly given as 940 x 240; the 940 value must have been combined from 3 LCDs. After couting pixels I'm sure resolution is very close to 320x240 which represents a loss in quality from VHS tape video. The fan is noisier than newer full sized projectors.
PROS:
*Bulbs are CHEAP, the MR-16 12v 35w halogen can be had for less than ten bucks :)
*Adujstments of brightness, contrast, hue, and color are adequate.
*Light, durable, compact, and attactively shaped.
*Price of one hundred fifty seemed reasonable.
*Will work nicely from 12v power source directly without using included AC adapter, draws 5 amps at 12v.
*Bright enough for projecting a small image during the day, and a huge image at night.
*Includes a stand to point it straight up for ceiling viewing, and an RCA patch cable.
*Speaker volume goes pretty loud.
CONS:
*Low resolution (320x240) will only be acceptable for low-tech uses.
*Newer, better, cheaper projectors should be available soon.
*Audio inputs are stero, but output from speaker is mono.
*No keystone adjustment means the angle of projection needs to be setup carefully.
*Fan is cheap and noisy, but looks like there's lots of space to replace it with two quiet fans. One in original location, the second could go behind the grill on the opposite side.
There are some interesting LED replacement versions of this projector's bulb on e bay which produce very litle heat. I'm going to try one & then disable the fan for silence and a big reduction in power consumption.
