Once upon a time they actually showed plays on late night television. I have not seen this play since first shown in 1967 but remember it with a great deal of fondness. This review is based on the original telecast, but I have waited a long time to see this again and have to recommend it. If you enjoy plays, Maxwell Anderson, or want to see Dustin Hoffman in a very early role then this time-travel fantasy is for you. Orson Bean is the lead actor but Hoffman stands out as he ages through the passing years in the play. Broadway Theater Archive deserves applause. for releasing this series of plays.

This 1967 program, which preceded The Graduate, clearly demonstrates the early genius of Dustin Hoffman. The past and present co-exist in Maxwell Anderson's 1930's play when a disappointed invnetor unleashes his latest gadget - a "star wagon" - that will return its driver to any desired point in time. The time machine gives him a chance to revamp his life. In an especially vivid characterization, a very young Dustin Hoffman portrays the inventor's muttering stooge. Also stars actor, comedian, and game show regular Orson Bean (Being John Malkovich), Eileen Brennan (Private Benjamin, The Last Picture Show), and Richard Castellano (The Godfather's Clemenza).
