(More customer reviews)I have both Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up and the Avia Guide To Home Theater. If you're a serious video/audiophile, you will want to get the Avia Guide To Home Theater which has far more comprehensive video/audio calibration tests and procedures.
Then again, I suspect the S&V disc is more aimed at the 'mass market' and as such, it does an excellent job. The explanations are very well (and occasionally humorously) explained by two highly appealing presenters. The audio/video tune-ups are a subset of what's available on the Avia Guide disc, though the S&V disc also includes some test patterns from Avia Pro which I hadn't seen before.
I very much like the 'Extras' section of the disc which has some great demo clips from Dolby, DTS, and THX. These are not available on Avia Guide to Home Theater. Also, the DTS tune-up is not available on the Avia Guide, and is most welcome though it didn't result in any changes to my audio settings.
I experienced a strange glitch with the video on the speaker balance tune-up - the wrong speaker was highlighted or the previous menu would be displayed. Weird. I have had no problems with the Avia Guide.
Overall, at the MSRP ...I highly recommend the Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up. It's informative and entertaining, and I think it will help novice users better understand and make the most of their home theaters.

(More customer reviews)Ordered on Monday night and received on Thursday with FREE shipping from TigerDirect! The box showed a weight of 50 lbs which is pretty light for a 47" flat panel. The picture and colors are really excellent. I'm too cheap to spend $300 on a Blu player but Time Warner HD and standard DVD's look very nice. Can I say the image is better then an LG, Sharp, Samsung etc?? I think with any one of those brands, I'd probably be saying the same thing. Toshiba quality is hard to beat and I really wanted the USB/SD card slot for showing pictures. I've played MP3's from my thumbdrive and even viewed some AVI files. The JPEG picture display from my memory stick was excellent but their 'browser' seems to be a little buggy because now I'm having some trouble trying to get it to recognize the image files again.

may need a firmware update for the picture browser
this is not a 'narrow bezel' model

6-1-09: I'm a bit disappointed because the picture viewer from an SD card or USB flashdrive still does not work. I've contacted Toshiba and they say they are 'still working on it'. If you go into the store to buy one of these, take a thumbdrive (or SD card) and test this out first.

(More customer reviews)I searched and compared projectors for a long time before settling on this one. I need a highly portable, easily set-up, projector for slideshows, movies, presentations, and the occasional killer gaming session. I'm not using it for home theatre or anything high-tech. So far I'm very satisfied. It's easy to set up with basic electronic A/V knowledge. It's less confusing than other projectors I've worked with, and the A/V mute and instant on/off are particularly handy. The remote does just about everything too. My big problem is that it has USB connectivity to a computer, Plug-n-play!!, but only for PCs! As a Mac user I was frustrated that it did not say ANYTHING about this in the specs until I opened the box. Especially frustrating is that earlier models seemed to have good connectivity with Macs, so I don't know what happened. However, no biggie because it still connects with the component cable, and even to my iPod with the help of the iPod A/V cable. All-in-all a good purchase, especially for the price.

(More customer reviews)I just got my TV last Friday and it is everything that I have expected. Unlike the first reviewer on this site, I have not experienced the overheating issues (fingers crossed). If you read his review he did admit the TV was great until that started happening. I just hope I don't get the same issue.
On to my review:
I spent over a year and a half researching flat panels. I came close to purchasing a Samsung 71F series, but when the salesman told me that new 2008 models were coming out in March, I decided to hold and do more research on those models. I almost purchased the 5 series, but when I found out that it does not have 120hz refresher rate, I decided to research the 6 series and ended buying the 46A650.
I briefly looked at the 7 series, but when I found out the only difference between the two was that the 7 series has a USB port for your MP3 player and 1 GB of cache, I figured it was not for me. I use a dock connected to my receiver when I play my MP3, so to me that was a useless function to fork over extra $$$ for. In addition, I have a PS3 so I don't really need the 1GB of cache to use the TV as a multimedia center. If you don't have a PS3 and plan to use your TV to view pictures and play music then the 7 series might be for you.Pros:
I have the 46" and I was amazed at how light it was. I was able to pick it up by myself and put it on the stand. The red is absolutely amazing. That's the favorite thing my Fiancée likes about this TV. Personally, I like the red because it is very subtle and goes great with our family room.
The first night we got it we watched the movie Ratatouille on Blu-Ray Disc. Let me tell you after watching the movie my jaw was sore because I think I spent more than 3/4ths of the movie with my jaw open from the amazing picture. The picture was so clear and concise that we paused it and we were able to even see the little freckles on the mice throughout the movie, including the separate hairs.
As I said earlier I play video games with my PS3, so the 120 hz refresher rate was critical to have. MLB the Show 08 is insane. Just looking at the players faces and even the fans blew me away. My brother has a 46" inch Vizio 1080P and he recommended it to me saying that there is not much difference from the two so I am better off saving. Let me tell you, he is absolutely wrong. I've watched his Vizio and to be honest, it can't even hold the jockstrap of the 46A650 if it was a male. There is a big difference believe me. The only TV that could probably match-up to this one is the XBR Bravia with 120HZ. That would've been what I would have purchased if I had not gotten this one. Up until now, I have absolutely no regrets.
The reason I researched for over a year and a half is because I wanted to get a TV that if something new came on the market a few months later, I would not regret my purchase. I feel very strongly that I will not regret this purchase down the line.
I love having 4 HDMI inputs. This was very important for my purchase also, since I have separate HDMI components. The TV also has an ethernet port, so I have it plugged into the internet. I can get weather, news and stock quotes through it. I'll admit, I haven't used it much, but it's nice to know, I can check the temperature at the touch of the button.
The blacks on this TV are awesome and I can have my curtain open on my huge family room window and I can see the tv clearly during the day. I love the TruSurround feature, since right now I only have two speakers and a subwoofer. This feature is meant to improve the sound quality for people who use two speaker systems. I plan to get a surround sound system eventually, but it's going to be a while. That's where this tool comes in handy
The screen is glossy, but I don't have an issue with it. I like the glossy look and besides, it is meant to make the colors more vibrant and intense. I've played with the different viewing modes, but actually, I like standard the best. The movie mode is a little too dark for me and the game one is a little too bright. Standard mode is my desired preference.
The remote is oddly shaped and takes a while to get used to. It also has an ipod like scroll. Some people complain that it is an ugly remote. This is ridiculous; I'm sorry, but I did not purchase this TV for its remote. Anyway, I'm planning on upgrading to an RF Logitech remote this summer anyway.
Cons:
The TV is so good that on the tv stations with weak signals, you can see the weakness of the signal. On some you could see the lines and imperfections, due to having a weak signal. That is only a with a few channels. It's a negative, but that's what you get when the picture is very detailed; You will not only get the good qualities, but the bad also, if the signal is not strong. Regardless, that issue will be moot next year when the tv stations will be required to broadcast by digital signal.
Another issue is, that when you turn it on it takes about 3-4 seconds to pick up my digital cable signal from my DVR box. In addition when you switch between sources it takes around the same amount of time to pick up the signal. I'm impatient, which is a negative quality of mine. In our household, it seems like it is an issue only with me, since it does not bother my fiancee at all or any of our friends. Maybe it would not be a con if I was not so stupidly impatient.
Those are really the only two issues I have with the TV and to me they are very minor ones. I just pray I don't start getting the issues, the first reviewer experienced.
Overall:
I am very happy with my purchase. I am very satisfied and do not feel guilty or have any regrets about making this purchase. Up until now, I feel this TV is worth every penny I paid for it. I'll be updating my review as I learn more about this TV. I hope my review helped you, even if it was only a tad bit helpful, before making your investment on a flat panel television. Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color Review

(More customer reviews)When I purchased this TV from Amazon.com I had already decided on this Samsung 52" series and was trying to decide between the 650 and the 750. At the time there was a small price difference between the two on Amazon.com. I ended up choosing the 650 because I was placing the TV inside a nook that had limited space.
The 650 has a less bulky frame around the LCD screen and therefore it was only 50.2 inches wide as compared to the 750 which is 52" wide. Both screens have the exact same visual display area. Beyond trying to accommodate my limited space, I felt that the smaller frame looked nicer on the TV than the larger frame.
The other reason I chose the 650 is that it can swivel on the base, whereas the 750 is fixed on its base. Because I have placed the TV in a nook, this swivel feature has come in very handy as I have had to get behind it from time to time to plug in cords, etc.
I have read a lot about screen reflection and was bracing myself for a potentially unpleasant experience during daytime viewing, especially since the room the TV is in has windows all the way across two walls and is full of sunlight daily. I'm happy to report that screen reflection is absolutely no problem. The TV that I was replacing with the Samsung LCD was an older 32" Panasonic Panablack analog TV with the glass screen, which had a lot of reflection. As a point of reference, the Samsung has about 20% of the screen reflection of my old TV (judging from when the TV is off). When the TV is on, the Samsung has about 5% of screen reflection compared with what I used to have with my old TV, which may be due to the incredible brightness of the display.
I spent a number of months on this decision and I feel like I hit a home run with this purchase. Samsung has certainly exceeded my expectations with this model and I have been very satisfied with my first experience of buying a TV online from Amazon.com.
DEC 20, 2008 UPDATE: I've now owned the TV for more than 6 months. No regrets. The TV has survived well in a family with 5 kids under age 10. It's taken some direct hits to the screen with toys thrown by a 2-year-old but any marks on the screen easily rubbed off. It still looks just like the day I first got it and runs perfectly. I'm very happy with this purchase.
JUNE 7, 2009 UPDATE: Still going strong after 1 year. Absolutely no problems with the TV. Best purchase I ever made. Everyone who has seen it can hardly believe the picture quality. I get positive comments all the time.

Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-L26X1 26-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

We replaced an 18 year old 27" CRT set with this one and it's a beauty. I am a TV news cameraman with thirty years in the business so I look at a lot of high end monitors at work.
When I went to the store I didn't expect to get a great set in this size and frankly 720P didn't excite me much either.
After looking at top tier sets from Sony, LG, Samsung, Toshiba and Mitsubishi I ended up on the Panasonic.
I was shocked at how good all the upper tier sets looked but the Panasonic seemed to have a little better detail down in the blacks and seemed to track highly detailed scenes with less digital noise than the others, but it was close accross the board.
The off air ATSC tuner is excellent and the set has all the inputs you could reasonably need. I do not intend to plug in an iPod so that wasn't a factor in my choice.
My DVD player is older and does not pass audio through the HDMI output so I connected it to the set via the component outs and I feel no need at all to upgrade to a BlueRay player. At this size this is a wonderful combination.
My general feeling is that if you watch a lot of HDTV that is live or tape such as sports then Panasonic flat screens just seem to pull a little more quality out of the signal. For movies it is more of a level playing field.
This is pretty subjective but it's how I see it.
It's amazing how far your money goes in this stuff anymore.

First, I love this television. The screen is beautiful, and there are a ton of inputs (2xHDMI, 2xComponent, VGA, and more!). The tech support team in Maine is top notch and very friendly. The problem is the lip sync. I've seen it with component cabling and standard video inputs. It doesn't seem as bad when I watch my DVD's via HDMI cabling.
I bought this unit at Sam's Club in Tallahassee and have already returned one unit only to discover the second one does it as well. I've got another week before I have to return it, and I'm still not sure what we're gonna do. Great screen for an awesome price ($480 here), but the lip sync issue is a true pain to endure.
Without the lip sync problem, I'd give this TV FIVE STARS, but TWO is as much as I can rate it for now.
For what it's worth, Westinghouse support says that not all the units have this problem. I guess it's time for me to take it back and try Number Three.

Philips Blu-ray Disc Player, BDP7200/37 Review

Comparing this one with Sony 301, BX1, Toshiba A2, E500, Philips 5992 and Oppo 970HD.
Blu-Ray - ok. If you must have a BD player, this may be a nice choice. Especially if you need Divx compatiblity. No Ethernet tho.
SD DVD - Upconversion is typically poor, as is most BD players. Not as good as HD DVD, E500, or Oppo. Even $39 5992 is superior.
Divx - poor resolution, compared to 5992. Subtitles are not well formatted, compared to LG/Zenith Divx compatible players.
Pros:
Cheaper than sony BD players up til now.
Cons:
No ethernet, poor divx quality/compatibility. typical BD sluggish remote command response. Remote is long, heavy, button layout is horrible.
5992 has much better remote.
Summary:
I returned this unit. Too many drawbacks. Especially at this price. Will wait for a player that make me happy in all respects. If I had to buy something now for a HDTV HDMI setup, it would probably be the $39 Philips 5992. Great value and performance.
Reviewed using a 50" PDP 1080i using HDMI connection.

(More customer reviews)This is my first HDTV. I bought it because my brother-in-law has the previous model, which is pretty much the same. He loves it for the bedroom because it's light and just all around a great TV.
Cable broadcasts in 720p/1080i. So unless you have the room and money for a larger screen, have a Blu-Ray DVD player or are a serious gamer, go with the 720P and save yourself some bread.
I'm very happy with the sound and picture. I do not have this hooked up to a home theater. There are plenty of inputs, so it should work well for your system. I tried my JVC HD camcorder and it was simple to connect and view.

Toshiba 46G300U 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV (Black Gloss) Review

(More customer reviews)A good TV at a very good price; it does have a couple of issues, which may be no big deal for you, depending on your needs.
Good: The picture is very good, comparable to much more expensive sets, in both standard and high definition. The 120Hz refresh does make a difference, although if, like me, you're accustomed to the slight jitter of high-speed motion on a 60Hz set the smooth motion will seem a little unnatural at first!
It has a good selection of input ports. No real internet connectivity, but I figure that functionality will be obsolete in a couple of year anyway, so it makes more sense for that to be built into a dedicated component or blue-ray player or something similar in any event.Bad: Power cord is hardwired into the back of the set, rather than being detachable - that was a real nuisance when I was trying to run the cables. More importantly, the internal speakers are pretty poor. Compounding this problem, it has neither analog audio out nor a headphone jack! If your external speaker system/receiver takes digital optical SPDIF ("Toslink"?) connections (most recent ones do), you're good - otherwise you'll need an adapter (Somthing like this: Digital Audio To Analog Audio Converter, although mine is still on order so I can't vouch for it yet.)
Still, if you want really good sound, no flat-panel will deliver that, and you could add a $200 soundbar to this to get a system that will have as good a picture and much better sound than more expensive sets. If you already have a good sound system (especially one with optical inputs), this is a very good option for the money.

(More customer reviews)This is a very impressive TV. It replaces a 34-inch Sony WEGA tube-based high-def television that I bought in 2003, and I have an XBR6 in another room.
Picture quality is very good. I'm not an expert and won't quibble about technical details. All I know is that I can see the makeup that doesn't completely cover the news anchor's face, and I can examine his dental work. That's probably more than I really need to see. :-) The picture seems to pop out into the room, and that effect is enhanced by the TV's narrow frame. There's a little bit of what I guess is called "mura" when there is no picture on the screen, but it's hardly noticeable and vanishes completely when a picture appears, even if the picture doesn't occupy the entire screen. Not an issue at all.
Sound quality is also very good. I use a separate speaker and amp system if I'm watching something where sound is especially important, but the built-in speakers here serve their purpose quite well and are amply adequate for routine use.
For me the most interesting thing is the ethernet connection, though this is not for browsing the 'net. Sony is still in the process of updating its internet presentation, but I have used the TV to download high-definition movies from Amazon, and it worked very well. Some competition in that space would be useful. Why no NetFlix access? (8/4/09: After an automatic software update last night there's a NetFlix logo and a message that NetFlix access will be available in the fall.)
With movies and TV programs available from Amazon and others, with the Bravia's expanding internet access, and with local broadcast stations offering multiple digital channels with different content, this TV could compete with cable and DirecTV. DirecTV's limited selection of pay per view movies just cannot compare to this. Also, the increasing capability for "a la carte" purchase of program episodes currently available only through DirecTV (or other cable or satellite providers) will reduce the value of my monthly subscription. Really has made me consider my DirecTV subscription.
The XBR9 can retrieve photographs (or music or movies) from my computer via my home ethernet network, or from a flash drive plugged into a USB port, so I'll be able to make lots of people view my photographs and slide shows! (Of course, seeing your photos on this screen in superb color and detail will necessitate another visit to Amazon to upgrade your collection of photography paraphernalia.)
One little quibble: there's a panel of switches located on the right side at exactly the position where I put my hand to move the TV on its mount (Amazon shows an image). Sure would have been thoughtful of Sony if they could have provided some kind of protective device to make it a little harder to accidentally flip one of those switches when I'm trying to adjust the position of the TV.
Finally, and this is important: I installed it using a Sanus wall mount Sanus Systems VMAA26B Universal Articulating Mount with Extended Reach for 30" to 50" Displays (Black). The TV has a lot of mass, and if the cables reach their limit while the TV is still moving, something has to give. So be careful to leave enough slack in the connecting cables to allow the TV to move freely throughout its range. That's especially important with the coaxial antenna cable that screws into its connection and can't merely be pulled out, but it seems possible that you could also damage other connectors, including the HDMI connections.

It has all the up to date features a HDTV needs ... it has the DVI option for HDTV, has Component Inputs for your DVD player, has S-Video for your satellite or similar, has several standard A/V inputs for your VCR or game system, etc.,. It has everything you need for your basic entertainment system. Additionally the picture quality is one of the best for a projection system. But be weary of that concept, this TV is huge...57", and with this amount of size, the picture quality on "smaller" objects is not going to be super crisp or sharp using even a satellite digital feed. But that holds true on all TVs this big...I think. So for example when watching basketball and you get the half court view the players are not real super sharp ... you can't really see those little details like face features, etc.,. You know it's KOBE but you can't pick up the eyes, etc.,. But for "regular" shows that usually don't have such small images, it's wonderful. Toshiba has made the remote and TV use very easy and user friendly. You can easily access video 1,2,3,4 etc.,. for the various electronic components you have. So all good. BUT ... one drawback was the amount of time it took for delivery from Amazon. It took a month although the initial advertised estimate was 1 to 2 weeks. I notice now, though, it says 1 to 2 days, but I notice it's coming from J&R not Amazon and the shipping jumped like $200 so maybe that isn't an issue now. Bottom Line: An overall high quality, full featured, 57" HDTV.

(More customer reviews)We have owned quite a few portable DVD players. Normally, we use them on trips for the children. On this last trip, we decided to splurge on these Coby tablet DVD players.
The DVD players fit into sleeves, which have cutouts for the screen and controls. Buckle straps attach the sleeves to the headrests. This is an easier process than attaching standard DVD cases to headrests. The sleeve design makes it more difficult for the children to access the DVD's in the player -- a positive, if your children are very young but a negative, if you have slightly older children who would normally be able to change the DVD on their own. It's not impossible to do, just inconvenient.
The player can be controlled from buttons on the front, but it's easier to do with the included remote (which comes with batteries). Volume must be controlled via a wheel on on the side of the player.
Picture quality is very good, rich and vibrant, even when viewing from different angles.
Sound is fine at home. In the car, the sound can sometimes be drowned out by the white noise of the road and other background noise. Headphone jacks and earphones are included. Sound quality through headphones is excellent.
The back of the DVD player has a pull-out stand, in case you want to set it on the table for viewing. We tried that and it worked very well.
The DVD player has a battery so it can be played without the need for an outlet. It also comes with plugs for the wall and car outlets.
So far, so good. We are very happy with our choice and would buy these players all over again.
PROS:

Epson EX70 3LCD Multimedia Projector, WXGA, 2000 Lumens Review

(More customer reviews)For starters, let me give you my background. I have long been a fan of projectors for my home theater. For the last three and a half years, I have used the Epson Powerlite S3 which I have been quite happy with in terms of performance. My wife and I installed it on the ceiling, built an 80 inch projector screen using white black-out cloth, and use a switchbox to display everything from DVD's to TV. It has mostly worked flawlessly until it started "bleeding" blue colors across the screen. Recently, I purchased a Playstation 3 and a multimedia computer, and I was wanting something that would display a higher resolution than the 800X600 that the S3 displays. After doing much research, I finally decided on the EX70 as a replacement for the S3.
Though there are not many reviews of this projector and some of them are somewhat negative, I have not been at all disappointed. I took down the S3, I placed the EX70 in the same place overhead mounts, and it projects a crisp 74 inch image onto the screen. The 1280X800 resolution handles a 720p picture from the Playstation with no problems whatsoever. I have spent the last two weeks playing video games (Midnight Club Racing: Los Angeles) watching Blu-Ray movies (Night at the Museum), and watching off-the-air HD signals from my computer. All of these pictures are gorgeous. The colors are rich. The modes that one can choose (such as Gaming mode or Theater mode) actually help to create the mood for the moment. I go home each night from a long day at work, and my wife and I always look forward to trying new modes, adjusting the image, and looking for new ways to utilize the projector (i.e. we plan to buy a DVI to HDMI connector to try with the computer).
Compared to the S3, the picture is brighter, the colors more brilliant, the "screen door" has disappeared (unless you get within three or four feet of the screen), and the number of options have increased (i.e. being able to zoom, having an HDMI input).
So far, I have tested everything but the HDMI (the cable should be shipping soon) and the speakers (I've hooked it up to my surround sound system), and everything works as advertised. The SD card does indeed display picture slideshows with ease. The USB connection, when connected to my computer, displays a signal that rivals the VGA connection, though it doesn't refresh the page as often thereby making motion images a bit jerky. The VGA doubles as a component input if you purchase the right cable.
As far as criticisms, the only concerns I have at this point is the fact that some of the lower quality images (i.e. I've tried an old Nintendo 64 gaming machine with the projector) do not appear as crisp, but I have a feeling that it has nothing to do with the projector and has everything to do with the age of the gaming machine. As well, as another person mentioned, the blacks could be blacker, but when compared to the older technology of the S3, the blacks look quite dark. The auto-keystone correction might be nice if someone uses this projector as a business projector, but for my home theater system, I have turned it off.
For a two year warranty, a bulb that lasts 4,000 on low mode, a $700 or lower price range, no "rainbow effects" as some DLP projectors have, and a bigger than 50 inch HD picture, I have been quite happy with this purchase. I have immensely enjoyed it the last two weeks, and it was worth the upgrade from the older S3 model.

(More customer reviews)This projector is fine if it were about $100 cheaper. They are charging an extra $100 or so because it supposedly can read memory cards or thumb drives and display JPG images without a computer.
Great idea. Unfortunately, the firmware that reads the cards or thumb drives is very primitive and full of bugs.
The default mode in Photoshop for outputting JPGs will not read on this projector! It will only read raw JPGs straight from a camera that have not been edited at all! Not very useful as far as I am concerned.
I spent a lot of time with Epson tech support and they confirmed the problem.
Amazon refused to support us in trying to return it. However, the seller did give us a refund of $70 which softened the pain.
If we knew it did not really work as advertised, we would have probably selected a different projector. As it is, it does work OK, but it needs a computer just like every other projector.

(More customer reviews)This is a good product. I especially liked the design and convenient menu. Very easy to use and good picture quality. Two things I did not like about this projector: (1) no optical zoom and (2) only 800by600 resolution. This is not a problem if you plan to place the projector close to the screen, such that your image is not very large. In my case I wanted to project images on a wall in my living room (which is about 14 inches long) and mount the projector next to the opposite wall. It did not work. The image size was huge and the image quality was not so good. I could see separate pixels and it was very annoying. You can decrease the image size digitally, but it does not improve the image quality.
I ended up returning this projector and ordering Epson Powerlite 76C LCD instead. Couldn't be happier. 76C has all the same features + 1024by768 resolution and optical zoom. Definitely worth additional $250!

(More customer reviews)This projector is a very good choice for home entertainment as well as work in an office or in the lab [my case]. It is very bright even when operated in economy mode. The self adjusting feature is very good, like for instance the auto keystone. The menu is easy to navigate, and efficient. The lamp is good, and cheap. The projector is quiet, and doesn't get too hot while operating. The cover lid for the lamp is a good extra. The machine is light and very easy to carry with the provided bag.
The remote could be bigger with bigger buttons. The VGA cable is rather short but can be replaced with a 10ft super-VGA shielded video cable for about $20.
In essence, a must buy! Clear, bright and sharp images/videos at a very reasonable price. I had a DELL projector before and I regret I didn't trust EPSON to begin with!
